Nominations are Now Open for the 2019 Darrell Awards

The 2019 Darrell Awards Jury is pleased to announce that nominations are now OPEN for the Awards.

This year, we are accepting nominations for:

  • Best Midsouth SF/F/H Novel, Novella, or Short Story on a one year basis (works published between November 1, 2017, and October 31, 2018);
  • Best Midsouth SF/F/H Other Media on a two year basis (works that were published or first shown to the public between November 1, 2016, and October 31, 2018); and
  • The Coger Memorial Hall of Fame on an ongoing basis (for works that were not considered during their year of eligibility and were qualified at the time they were published).

Please see the rules attached to the Nomination Form for complete details.

Please note that the email address for the Jury remains darrellawards at gmail dot com (spelled out for reasons).

The physical address for printed correspondence and books has changed (see it on the Nomination Form).

Please note that you do NOT have to send the Rules portion of the Nomination Form document back to us; we only need that first page – the actual Nomination Form itself.

The Nomination Form can be found in the following google drive folder in several formats. Please feel free to use whichever format works best for you: 2019 Nomination Forms.

Works must be published by October 31st (Halloween) of this year (2018) in order to qualify.  Please see the Rules for the other qualifications.

We will accept nominations until December 1, 2018.

Nominations are NOW OPEN for the 2018 Darrell Awards

The Darrell Awards Jury is pleased to announce that Nominations are now open for the 2018 Darrell Awards.

This year, we are accepting nominations for Best Midsouth Novel, Novella, and Short Story, as well as Young Adult works and the Dal Coger Memorial Hall of Fame Award.

In order to be considered, the work must be published no later than October 31, 2017, and nominated no later than December 1, 2017.

PLEASE NOTE: the Nomination Deadline is one month earlier than it has been, mostly because MidSouthCon will be held almost a month earlier than usual in 2018. The Darrell Awards are presented at the Banquet at MidSouthCon, so when that event is held earlier, we have to adjust our deadlines.

This also means that we will turn in a list of Finalists sooner. Look for that Finalists List to be available by February 1, 2018.

Young Adult Works will be considered for two years. So, if it is otherwise eligible and is a Young Adult work, you can nominate it —  if it was published between November 1, 2015, and October 31, 2017.

For Novels, Novellas, and Short Stories, we are looking at just one year (as usual) — November 1 of 2016 to October 31 of 2017.

The Hall of Fame Award is for a work or works that were not considered during their year(s) of eligibility. So, there are no publication deadlines for the Hall of Fame Award — just the Nomination Deadline, which applies to everything.

All works must be nominated by December 1, 2017, or they will not be considered for the 2018 Darrell Awards or the Hall of Fame Award.

Also, please note that we have a new Chairperson, so the addresses to send your nominations and your nominated works have changed. The new addresses are on the Nomination Form.

You can find the 2018 Darrell Awards Nomination Form in multiple formats here: 2018 Darrell Awards Nominations Forms.

Please see the Rules attached to the Nomination Form, as we have added a new Rule at the end to state how we will handle the plaques and the certificates that have been a mainstay of the Awards Presentation at the Banquet for the 20+ years of these Awards.

The new Deadlines are also stated in the Rules, which go into detail about what does and what does not qualify for consideration.

We look forward to receiving your nominations and to considering your Midsouth SF/F/H.

2018 Darrell Awards Jury Begins

We had the first meeting of the 2018 Darrell Awards Jury on Saturday, July 22, 2017, and shook things up a bit.

It pleases me a great deal to announce that our Chairperson for the 2018 Darrell Awards Jury is Kitty Jungkind, an attorney who has served as an active member of the Jury for several years. Backing her up in the Vice Chair‘s spot is Sylvia Cox, who is on the Board of Directors of MidSouthCon, as well as several other groups, and who recently won a spot on something called the Grizzlies Grannies and Grandpas. ( Wow!)

I asked for this change in leadership so that I can focus on rebuilding my income, which has been diminished these past 2 years as I dealt with my wife’s declining health and my grief at her passing. I will continue to be on the Jury and to handle this website. Other than that, I am here to help with the transition.

We will shortly have a new email address and a new physical address for nominations and for nominated works. As soon as that is in place, we will post the 2018 Nomination Form and nominations for the 2018 Darrell Awards will be opened.

Meanwhile, please note that we have had to adjust two of our three deadlines. The current deadlines starting now are:

  • The work must be published by October 31, 2017 (Halloween of this year — publication deadline);
  • The work must be nominated by December 1, 2017 (nomination deadline); and
  • We will turn in a list of Finalists to the various departments of MidSouthCon by February 1, 2018, with publication on this website to follow shortly after that (finalist list deadline).

The Nomination Deadline and the Finalist List Deadline are both sooner than they have been in past years.

These new deadlines are based on the requests of the Convention Committee AND the fact that MidSouthCon will be held in 2018 weeks sooner than has been typical in previous years.

Please check back here for the 2018 Nomination Form and further announcements, which will be posted as soon as possible.
