2022 Darrell Awards Winners Announced

On Saturday March 26, 2022, at the Banquet at MidSouthCon 38, the following 2022 Darrell Awards were presented.

Coger Memorial Hall of Fame Award: Sheree Renée Thomas for her extraordinary contributions to literacy in the Midsouth and the world.

Best Midsouth Novel:

Winner: Serpent’s Mark by Beth Alvarez
First Runner-up: The Girl Who Had No Shadows by John and Victoria Babb
Additional Finalists: The Ferryman by John E. Siers and The Dragons of Styx by John E. Siers

Best Midsouth Novella

Winner: Madam and The Map: A Journey in Five Movements by Sheree Renée Thomas (in Nine Bar Blues collection)
First Runner-up: Shadows Before Sunrise by Melissa Olthoff (in It Takes All Kinds anthology)

Best Midsouth Short Story

Winner: Five-Six-Seven-Eight by James Paavola (in Lies Along the Mississippi anthology)
First Runner-up: Well Being by Elden Lee
Additional Finalists:
Dead Man’s Hand by Phyllis Appleby (in Lies Along the Mississippi)
The Orisha’s Handmaiden by Angelyn Sherrod (in Lies Along the Mississippi)

Congratulations to all the Winners, First Runners-up, and additional Finalists.

All of the honorees were present at the Awards ceremony except the Babbs and Ms Olthoff. The certificates for those 2 will be mailed to them in protective sleeves.

News on 2020 Darrell Awards

As the Darrell Awards have been presented at MidSouthCon every year (except the 1 year there was no con) and as this year’s MidSouthCon has been postponed due to the COVID19 pandemic, the question has been raised :

What About the 2020 Darrell Awards?

First, they will be given.

Second, the Winners and Runners-up and other Finalists will be announced here and on other social media.

Third, the details of how and when for the above will be decided by the Jury shortly.

We want to have a robust discussion on this situation with an eye toward establishing a protocol for future use — and to do so while respecting the requirements of social distancing.

So, please be patient. And please check back here in a day or two.

Deadline Passed, Deadlines Approaching

As mentioned in previous posts here, the Darrell Awards operates on the basis of 3 deadlines. The first of those has passed — the publication deadline (October 31st).

The second is approaching — the nomination deadline. If you know of any work which you believe is eligible, you have until January 1, 2016, to nominate it. After that, it will be too late for it to be considered.

So, if you know of any eligible works, please NOMINATE them before 1-1-16.

We are accepting nominations until 1-1-16 for eligible works in novel, novella, short story, and Young Adult categories, as well as for the Coger Memorial Hall of Fame.
